The NENKA tapestry design is a  representation of the Ukrainian landscape – with its bold colours, natural materials and intricate designs created using traditional craft techniques.  It is a symbol of fertility and protection and a reminder of the elemental resources that sustain us.

Carefully hand-stitched, each tapestry is made with ten distinct materials sourced from our homeland including wool, jute, copper wire, brass, Black Sea shells and leather to create a vivid tribute to Mother Nature. By keeping alive ancient and traditional techniques in the weaving of this tapestry, we seek to honour our past while also looking towards the future to protect our environment.

Attention to details

The NENKA tapestry is infused with symbolism, let alone the intricate detail of its weaving. The leather strips woven into the tapestry remind us of black Ukrainian soil and reflect the fertility, strength and power of the land. Meanwhile, shells from the Black Sea pay tribute to the Ukrainian sea coast and the wire represents the iron ore excavated from the Kryvyi Rih quarry. The green tassels are an expression of the coniferous forests that define Ukraine's landscape and woven straw is a reference to the immense wheat fields, source of Ukrainian wealth.

The linen with its three-dimensional elements describes the peaceful sky and voluminous clouds above our heads - under which we are all equal. The strands of wire are the rain, which cleanses the earth, and the brass circle symbolises sunrise - the source of energy, the beginning of everything on earth. All these details combine to make a tapestry that is far more than just a piece of aesthetic art.
