This modern floor lamp from the ROOTS OF HOME collection was inspired by the architectural beauty of ancient Ukrainian homes. The lampshade gracefully mirrors the appearance of a traditional roof, adorned with its terracing of straw or shingles, meticulously created using a centuries old  intricate technique.

Working process

The lamp top is a work of art, skillfully fashioned with a metal frame, homespun canvas, and dyed rye straw. The base of the lamp features a truncated cone shape, carefully inlaid with dyed rye straw using a marquetry technique.

Floor Lamp ROOTS OF HOME in the interior

Thatched roofs were a prominent feature of Ukrainian traditional architecture. Dried straw, usually from grains like wheat, rye, or oats, was tightly bundled and layered onto the roof frame. The straw was arranged in a way that allowed rainwater to shed easily, preventing water penetration. This type of roof provided insulation against both cold and heat, and it was an economical choice given the abundance of straw in agricultural societies.
