2024 DESIGN TRENDS PART 1 - The Year to Go Bold, tear up the Rule Book and Embrace Our Values and Personality

  • It seems only fitting for January to examine the upcoming 2024 trends in home interior design and more importantly how our designers are responding.  When it comes to emerging styles and foresight, they are already ahead of the curve.

  • Here’s a snapshot of some of the trends we can expect to in the coming months. This is the year to celebrate artisanal designers, traditional craftsmanship and a design style that truly reflects individual personality, telling the homeowner’s unique story. With a mix of vintage, modern and meaningful artefacts, individuality is key, along with embracing strong personality in abundance. If ever it was time to throw caution to the wind and experiment with our home environment, this is the year to indulge.

  • 2024 will see us embrace tempered maximalism, a thumbs up for self-expression artfully balanced by the introduction of impactful pieces of art and décor, that are lively, experimental, and fun.  There is a move towards the light-hearted and less serious approach embracing unique design choices and worrying less about conformity.  The trend for maximalism can also be achieved using patterned wallpaper in bright cheery colours.

  • For fun quirky pieces look no further than Tasha Oro’s upcycled art pieces. Aside from her use of striking colour combinations, Tasha’s designs are packed with unique personality shown with her ‘Suprematic’ sculptures which creatively upcycle trash in her own inimitable style whilst also creating colourful, light-hearted accents, that appeal to our playful side. Tasha’s designs are not only bold but also functional as plant pots, vases and candle holders that add colourful interior accents.

  • Further examples of original style can be found in the eclectic furniture collections of Panoptikum, literally translated as ‘unusual objects’ fashioned on unconventional designs such as eggs, nuts, bugs, and bubbles to name a few.  Rarely seen design trends, these unique statement pieces are an artform in themselves, encouraging discussion, fascination, and an appreciation of their creative interpretation.

  • COFFEE TABLE NUT

  • CABINET BUGS

  • CABINET BUBBLES

  • Panoptikum’s playful representation of bugs with its defining large black spots seared into the solid wood veneer uses clever pyrography and quality brass accents to create arthropods (feet) of various shapes and sizes.  Bringing a smile to your face, this ingenious furniture collection comprises cabinets, sideboards, and nightstands.

  • Panoptikum’s ‘Bubbles’ cabinet with its suspended glass panel of glossy bubbles, appeals to our frivolous side, capturing the child-like wonder of floating bubbles. Available in many colours including bubble gum pink and sunny yellow, it is a celebration of whimsical excitement and a carefree desire to ditch the serious.

  • Perhaps the most obvious example of breaking free from the constraints of formal design is Panoptikum’s aptly named furniture range ‘Break Free’, representing an emotional breakthrough into another dimension using the portal of a hologram mirror on its iconic cabinet.

  • Or how about the jovial and infectious ‘Circus’ print of The O range of wallcoverings, awash with vibrant colour, juvenile fun, and somersaulting characters.  Made to withstand deep humidity, it is designed for high water areas making it a quirky backdrop for children’s bathrooms, shower, or pool rooms.

  • The O Collection’s enchanted ‘black sea and jellyfish’ wallpaper design depicts dancing blue strands interspersed with dots of vibrant pinks and greens to represent darting jellyfish and waving octopi.  To add to the drama and enchantment, the hues are designed to change with the power of RGB light, controlled by phone, which not only transforms the colour but tells a different story as the separate layers reveal themselves.

  • Aside from playful, it’s the year to showcase personal taste and embrace personality. No more hiding in the closets. It’s time to reveal who we are and what we like.  But more than that it is the year to shout about what we value, displaying artefacts and one-off pieces that tell a story… of generations, heritage, symbolism, architecture, and travel.  These intrinsic values of national heritage, symbolism and Ukrainian folklore lie at the very core of our designer’s creative process, whilst also serving to reinforce cultural identity and demonstrate solidarity and national pride in the face of the current political turmoil.

  • Indeed, the underlying core principle of Yalanzhi Objects, is one of temporal extent, a philosophy that aims to pass down the knowledge, value, and experience of previous generations to be enjoyed by future generations, by filling our homes with items of meaning. It also aligns with another of the year’s emerging styles, which sees a renewed appreciation of ‘folk florals’.  A trend that embraces tradition and delights us with its fresh and fanciful pattern and vitality.

  • The flowing sculptural pendants of Yalanzhi Objects that tell the story of the ‘Mavkas’, the mythical female creatures of the forest whose souls gain strength with the sunset.

  • Examples of emotional and cultural significance have been embodied into the following designs:

  • The deeply symbolic rug designs of Zv`yazani with their ‘Tree of Life’, ‘Birds of a Blue Garden’ and ‘June’ designs, steeped in Ukrainian folklore including the exquisitely designed folk florals.

  • Tree of Life

  • Birds of a Blue Garden

  • The spiritualism, religious and nature-inspired vases of Gorn Ceramics including the architecturally designed ‘Temples’ and ‘Pagoda’ collections together with the organically shaped ‘Shishka’ whose symbolism portrays life, success, and hard work in the shape of the conifer.

  • Tasha Oro’s preservation of Soviet monumental art which addresses her deep personal values of ethical consumption and support of The Kyiv Modernism movement. The influence of Ukrainian tradition can also be seen in her ‘Kahly’ panels which depicts the tree rooted in earthly possessions with a nod to the future, representing her artistic legacy.

  • The O collection of wallpapers celebrating the iconic architecture of Kyiv with all its history, influences, and changes over time including the iconic ancient monastery of ‘Kyiv-Perchersk Lavra’, the ornately clad ‘House of Actors’ and the artistic designs from the ‘Mosaic of The Pecherskaya Metro Station’.

  • The ‘VIYALO’ furniture collection of Ilab.designs representing the powerful force of wind power in contrast to the fragility of the human soul as it calls for the wind goddess Nemiza to help relieve suffering.

  • VIYALO Bar cabinet

  • 2024 will favour one-off pieces and traditional craftsmanship over the mass-produced consumer market.  This is music to the ears of our artisanal designers who embrace the traditional skills accumulated over centuries and actively seek to preserve and revive their methods, preferring to create bespoke or customisable designs over large-scale volume.

  • Take Zv`yazani who successfully overcame challenges to re-introduce the ancient technique of rug-making using traditional hand looms or Gorn ceramics with their ‘Flame’ Collection, made using kiln-dried wood fires that allow the master ceramist complete control over the airflow, temperature, and wood placement. Both design companies employ labour-intensive processes that take time, patience, and careful deliberation to create unique one-off designs which not only increases their monetary value but also reflect their quality.

  • With the focus on eclectic personality and deeply personal values, Ukrainian Product Design score a huge tick when it comes to what’s hot for 2024.

  • The USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukraine (USAID CEP) supports startups, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) aiming to provide support for competitive industries and firms on Ukrainian and international markets, foster a better business-enabling environment and enable Ukrainian companies to benefit from international trade.
